maintain 2014 came to a close with far more than 4,000 trade visitors from 30 countries who, for the first time ever, came to the Messe München trade fair center to gather information about the latest product developments and service trends. All in all, 221 exhibitors—which is five percent more than the last time the fair was held in 2012—presented solutions for the maintenance, inspection and repair of plants and machinery. They occupied more than 11,000 square meters of exhibition space.

According to a survey by Gelszus Market Research, 92 percent of the visitors who attended maintain 2014 gave it a rating of good, very good or excellent. In addition, 90 percent of those surveyed felt that maintain profited from the move to the Messe München trade-fair center. 84 percent of visitors are directly involved in the decision-making process in their companies. As a result, maintain underscores the great significance of industrial services to the plant and processing industry.

Reinhard Pfeiffer, Deputy CEO of Messe München, was very pleased about maintain's premiere at the trade-fair center in Riem: “These successful results have surpassed our expectations considerably. The move has definitely been worthwhile for everyone involved. Exhibitors and visitors profit from the physical and theme-oriented proximity to AUTOMATICA. The synergy effects will continue to strengthen interaction between these two events in the future.”

As Gerald Pilotto, Executive President of Bilfinger Industrial Maintenance Division, explains, the fair's new location and its proximity to AUTOMATICA have been very well received among exhibitors: “In our opinion, the decision to hold maintain at the Messe München trade-fair center at the same time as AUTOMATICA has been very positive. We have made high-quality contacts in these attractive surroundings that we expect will result in interesting projects.” Comments from Erich Bleimund, Managing Director at Altmann, were similar: “Moving maintain has had a positive effect on our business. Thanks to our proximity to AUTOMATICA, we had a larger number of visitors and made new customer contacts at our stand.”

maintain's highlights included a roundtable discussion as part of the Makers & Markets Forum. On the second day of the fair, representatives of the leading industrial service companies discussed the topic “Industrial service—Make or buy? Which mix is the ideal solution?” In this regard, Reinhard Maaß, Managing Director of Wirtschaftsverband für Industrieservice e.V. (WVIS), explained the coming challenges: “The job of the industrial service sector is to keep Germany competitive as an industrial location. However, this country's industrial service sector also faces many obstacles as a result of decisions and measures that have been taken, particularly in energy policy.” As Andreas Weber, Vice President of Business Development Sales and Marketing at Evonik Industries, explains: “The optimum solution in industrial service consists of intelligent sourcing models. When it comes to maintenance processes, collaborative approaches are required along the entire value chain.” The program of related events was rounded out by more than 50 lectures and daily tours of maintain.

Industrial Service 4.0 turned out to be a hot topic at maintain 2014. As companies transition to Industry 4.0, these services are making it possible to implement new, future-oriented maintenance concepts and expand the capabilities of remote services. Under the umbrella of the Fraunhofer Society, six organizations presented developments and solutions for Industrial Service 4.0. Bernd Bienzeisler, Head of the Competence Center at the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO), sees that as a significant development for the market: “In the future, almost all information about products, customers and their own resources such as employee capacities will be available in digital form. Only those who are in a position to put this information together in a sensible manner will be able to use it to generate capital for higher-quality service products.”
